Jimbo, The Miracle Worker

All that's pending is a physical, and Jose Vidro is a Mariner. The Nats are netting Chris Snelling, an oft-injured outfielder who's put up some excellent hitting stats in the minors. They're also getting a reliever, Elmiano Fruto, who I know nothing about.

I expect that our good friends at USS Mariner will be having a conniption any moment now. Check out Lookout Landing for bridge jumpers as well.

No word on the $$ changing hands, but it's probably safe to assume that there's quite a bit being shipped out (Actually it's in the article and I glossed right over it -- $12 million, ouch! I'm doubly an idiot; the MARINERS are paying $12 million. We're only on the hook for $4 million. Amazing! The Commisar has to approve it, but I don't see why he wouldn't). Regardless, getting Snelling for Vidro, a guy who I would've thought could pass through waivers unclaimed, is a steal.

I'll have more later... and I mean that!

  • Here's USS Mariner on Snelling 2 years ago. Adjust expectations downward because of all the injuries, of course, but it's a sign that there could be a few decent seasons in his bat. He's under team control for four more seasons, and won't be arbitration-eligible until next year.

  • I warned you about the injury-prone thing, right? Start here and scroll. Then click. And scroll. Then click. And scroll. Then....

  • Thanks to the knee, he's likely not a full time center fielder anymore. But Vidro wasn't a second baseman either. It evens out. ;)

  • M's fans, this is what to expect: Lots of slap-hit singles, the occasional drive to the warning track, mixed with some harmless groundballs -- except when there are runners on, then they're automatic DPs. Defensively, he should remind you a lot of Edgar Martinez. Seriously. He plays deep because he has no range. But still, he doesn't get to anything. Imagine Bret Boone hooked up with Aaron Boone in a drunken three-leg race, and that approximates Vidro's range.

They can't have the bad sense to play him at 2B, so he's gotta be the DH, right? Then he's definitely just like Edgar, just without the eye, the contact-hitting skills, those pesky extra-base hits. But he does have his foot speed.

  • I haven't felt this giddy since they sent Inning-Endy to the minors. Hell, maybe I WILL renew my tickets. (And, yes, I'm saying that before I've come to terms with the idea that this means that Cristian Guzman is our starting shortstop)

  • Here's a scouting report on Fruito. I wasn't impressed when I looked at his stats (link in the first part with his name), but they said he has good stuff; he just can't control it.

    • If this goes through...Bill Bavasi makes Wayne Krivsky look like freakin' Branch Rickey.

    • So FLop is our 2B?? Ok, I can live with that.

    • Not in a million years did I think anyone would be stupid enough to trade FOR Jose Vidro let alone give up two prospects for him. Bowden looks like a freakin genius if Vidro can pass the M's physical.

    • Thank goodness for dumb GMs. If they were all smart, we'd still be stuck with Vidro. Better yet, two prospects and only $4 million of Vidros' salary to pay? Steal of a deal.

Still, Vidro had some good years for the Spos. Would've been nice if those knees didn't have to play on that turf in Montreal.

    • I just want to add to the gloating. That was my first reaction on seeing the deal. On the other hand, karma means we're in for something really bad to happen. I mean JimBo hit this one out of the park . . . now he's probably talking with Theo right now about that Cordero/Pena deal.

    • Mariners fan here, checking out the celebration over on your side of the continent. In case you're still unsure, you robbed us blind.

The deal would suck for us if we'd just claimed Vidro and his salary for free, as he's either worse, or dramatically worse, at every possible position (2B? DH? 1B?) than the guy we already have.

And you're going to like watching Chris Snelling. He's got the potential to be a great player; he's got the bat for it. I'm rooting for him to shake the injury bug and show people what he can do. He was the only guy on our team who was aware of the "base on balls" concept, for one thing, which means pitchers have to throw him strikes.

Fruto's got some possibilities too. Big fat kid, 22, throws hard, might be coachable.

If the Nats ever visit Seattle, I'm going to be cheering for you guys, not ours. I might even buy a hat. Until that day I will never set foot in Safeco again. Yes, we are that unhappy. Congratulations.

    • Yep, gotta add to fnarf's statements. Snelling is a legit #2 hitter right now, probably good for a .380 OBP today, with peak seasons something like .420-.440 if he develops the way that pretty much everyone believes he will. Think Nick Johnson with 15-20HR power, he's ready to mash. Pretty similar #'s really, with the edge going to NJ. The only question about Snelling is whether or not he can kick the injuries. The good news for you guys is that his injury history isn't stuff you would expect to be chronic, except the knee which shouldn't do anything to his peak years whatsoever. There's been alot of talk in the M's blog-o-sphere about how his injuries were actually preventable (the major ones, anyways).

We really don't understand this trade from our end, but good job picking up a solid COF. Many of us referred to him as a 'Left-handed Edgar (Martinez),' so you're getting a pretty special player. I'll be watching Nat's games this season, that much is for certain!
